VISUAL ART - PAINTING

Painting is the art of applying paint, pigment, colour or any other medium to a two- dimensional, prepared flat surface such as canvas in a representational, imaginative or abstract way. The elements of design are used in various ways to produce sensations of volume, space, movement and light. Painting is a mental process more than a technical act, and a good painting is neither a mindless copy of something nor a 'coloured in' drawing. Emphasis on the uniqueness of the painted image, both in terms of its physical nature and its individualised, manmade content, is a cornerstone of the teaching of this course at the Art Centre.

Grade 10: Learners are introduced to using acrylic as a medium with a focus on basic formal elements as part of each project.

Grade 11: Learners are expected to follow an approach that is more experimental in terms of subject matter and the use of painting materials.

Grade 12: Learners are expected to use the painting medium with confidence as well as to develop a clearly individual and conceptual approach towards their subject matter.
