DESIGN - CERAMIC DESIGN

Ceramic design focuses on the art or technique of making objects of ceramic, especially from fired clay. Over the ages, ceramics have remained relatively untouched by technological progress. The hand-building techniques that are used today are probably not very different from those that were used thousands of years ago.

The basic skills that a potter needs for creating a well-crafted hand-built ceramic product also scarcely differ today from the skills used long ago. Contrary to potters who work on the wheel and who have to practise for years to master the techniques, hand builders can achieve competence far quicker with a little practice and very simple tools. This is therefore more suitable for learners, who spend only limited time at the Art Centre.

Grade 10: Learners are familiarised with the basic techniques such as wedging, hand building, application of colour and glazing. The course also covers the essential theoretical input.

Grade 11: Learners are expected to work almost independently with a high level of technical skill and competence.

Grade 12: Learners refine their skills, and have to master the ceramic materials, techniques and processes to create work that is representative of masterful artistry. They will develop originality and awareness of the possibilities of the use of the medium.
